Unweaving Memory

A pattern that does not return

My practice is rooted in family lace — a material archive of women’s experience. By transferring it into ceramics, I preserve both the fragility and resilience of a cultural code passed down through generations.

For this project, I give the lace to artificial intelligence as a “dataset of memory.”

Yet the AI cannot preserve it in its original form: it unravels my patterns and generates its own, generalized and endlessly repeating structures. In this glitch, a new form emerges: the “reading error” becomes a mode of mutation.

What in my practice was a carrier of individual history is turned by the algorithm into a universal pattern. Artificial intelligence gathers heterogeneous traces of memory and cultural codes, blending them into new combinations. In this process, the unique dissolves into the collective, the personal becomes part of a shared digital intelligence. The error that tears apart my original pattern is not a malfunction but a way to weave the individual back into the common flow.

Thus, my episode becomes a “line of code” within the collective laboratory of errors: here glitch is not destruction but an act that allows personal experience to enter into dialogue with collective machine memory.

Part of Code Error — a multimedia project exploring breakdowns: digital, biological, evolutionary, and gendered. It brings together artists from Europe, the USA and Asia, each working with visual and systemic distortions. Its core idea: error is a form of life, mutation is the language of evolution, and breakdown is an act of freedom.
